Annex E (Ambulance)

Annex E applies primarily to ambulance service staff and uses a flat percentage supplement on basic salary rather than per-hour enhancements.

The supplement is up to 25% of basic salary, based on the proportion of unsocial hours in your typical working pattern. It is calculated prospectively and paid as a regular addition to your monthly salary.

Unlike Section 2, the Annex E supplement does not vary shift by shift. Instead, your employer calculates the average unsocial hours in your rota and applies a corresponding percentage. For example, if 30% of your rota falls during unsocial hours, you would receive approximately 7.5% of basic salary as your unsocial hours supplement.

This approach gives ambulance staff more predictable monthly pay, as the supplement remains consistent regardless of variation between individual shifts.

About NHS Unsocial Hours Pay

NHS unsocial hours payments compensate staff who work outside of normal daytime hours (Monday to Friday, 06:00 to 20:00). There are two systems under Agenda for Change, and which one applies depends on your employer and role.

Section 2 (per-hour enhancement) is the standard system used by most NHS trusts. You receive a percentage enhancement on top of your basic hourly rate for each hour actually worked during an unsocial period. The percentage depends on your band and the specific time period (weekday night, weekend, or bank holiday). Higher bands receive higher enhancement percentages for weekends and bank holidays, while all bands receive the same 30% enhancement for weekday evenings and nights.

Annex E (flat supplement) is used mainly by ambulance trusts. Instead of paying per hour, your employer calculates a flat percentage supplement (up to 25% of basic salary) based on the proportion of unsocial hours in your normal working pattern. This is paid prospectively as part of your regular monthly salary.

Unsocial hours enhancements only apply to hours you actually work outside normal hours. They do not apply to annual leave, sick leave, or other absences, even if those absences fall during periods that would normally attract an enhancement. Both Section 2 and Annex E payments are pensionable under the NHS Pension Scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are NHS unsocial hours calculated?
Under Section 2 of Agenda for Change, unsocial hours are calculated as a percentage enhancement on top of your basic hourly rate for each hour actually worked during unsocial periods. The percentage varies by your AfC band and the specific time period. For example, a Band 5 nurse working a Sunday shift earns time plus 47% for each hour worked. Under Annex E (ambulance), a flat percentage supplement of up to 25% of basic salary is calculated based on your typical rota pattern.
What counts as unsocial hours in the NHS?
Under NHS Agenda for Change, unsocial hours are any hours worked outside the normal period of Monday to Friday, 06:00 to 20:00. This includes: weekday evenings and nights (20:00 to 06:00), Saturdays after 20:00 and all day Sundays, and all hours worked on public and bank holidays. Saturday daytime hours (06:00 to 20:00) are not classified as unsocial under Section 2.
What is the difference between Section 2 and Annex E?
Section 2 pays a per-hour percentage enhancement for each unsocial hour actually worked. The rate varies by band and time period (evenings/nights, weekends, bank holidays). Annex E, used mainly for ambulance staff, pays a flat percentage supplement on basic salary (up to 25%) based on the typical unsocial hours in your working pattern. The Annex E supplement is calculated prospectively and paid as a consistent monthly addition, whereas Section 2 pay varies from month to month depending on the shifts you actually work.
Do unsocial hours count towards my NHS pension?
Yes. Both Section 2 unsocial hours enhancements and Annex E supplements are pensionable pay under all NHS Pension Scheme arrangements (1995, 2008, and 2015 schemes). Pension contributions are deducted from unsocial hours payments, and the additional pay counts towards your pensionable earnings, increasing your eventual pension benefits.
What are the NHS weekend unsocial hours rates?
Under Section 2, weekend unsocial hours (Saturdays after 20:00 and all day Sundays) attract the following enhancements: time plus 30% for Bands 1-3, time plus 44% for Band 4, time plus 47% for Bands 5-7, and time plus 72% for Band 8a and above. Note that Saturday daytime hours (06:00 to 20:00) are paid at your normal basic rate and do not attract an unsocial hours enhancement.
